Sheku Kanneh-Mason dazzled us with his beautiful cello solo at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last weekend. It’s always inspiring to experience such talent! Sheku delivered his performance beautifully, with confidence and poise.
It turns out that he is one of seven talented classical music siblings. CBS Sunday Morning featured the family in its most recent broadcast and encourage you to see the replay here.
For me, one of the most interesting moments in the interview was with eight-year old Mariatu, who is following in Sheku’s footsteps as a cellist. She spoke about her aspirations to be an “amazing” world-class cellist. When asked what it would take to be amazing, she said, “It takes practice. You can’t just be amazing without a lot of practice.”
Ah. Out of the mouth of babes. She already knows what many adults haven’t thought about.
When you look around your organization, how many people do what it takes to be amazing? How many even think about being amazing?
The people who strive to be amazing (or excellent, or being the best, or whatever phrase you want to substitute) are easy to detect. They learn what they need to be great. They put in the time. They care about being the best. They also have a clear vision to be the best and don’t let other people or obstacles derail them.
As leaders, you should know who has this potential in your organizations. If it isn’t obvious, tune in to recognize it and you, too, will be dazzled with what you experience.
