It was recently Random Acts of Kindness week, February 11-17, where people celebrate the simple power of kindness. This isn’t about “grand gestures,” rather it’s about the small things we do in a spirit of compassion.
“Be kind when possible. It’s always possible.”
– Dalai Lama
The workplace often seems rushed and hectic, so offering some of these small things may seem out of place. Rest assured that the simplest gesture can go a long way. For example,
Offer a cup of cheer. Treat a colleague to coffee, tea, or their favorite treat. A small gesture can fuel someone’s day and even spark a meaningful conversation.
Convey gratitude. Express appreciation for your colleagues’ contributions and hard work. Feeling valued boosts morale and strengthens teamwork.
Celebrate team wins. Recognize achievements, big or small, and offer genuine praise. Celebrating success together builds a positive and supportive work environment.
Kindness doesn’t need a price tag. It’s about empathy, listening with genuine interest, and offering support. Infusing this into your team culture can make a positive, lasting difference.
For those of you naysayers who are reading this and thinking, “too soft and squishy for me,” you’re wrong. A little kindness goes a long way.
Your staff isn’t clairvoyant, so don’t assume that they know you are pleased with their performance. My clients who take the time to acknowledge their good work will tell you that this positive feedback has a multiplier effect.
Give this a try. You have nothing to lose and, frankly, a lot to gain by infusing a little kindness into the workplace.
